Grundsätzlich Neues weiß Daniel Gatti zur Zweiten Symphonie Gustav Mahlers nicht zu sagen. Dennoch ist dies eine gute Aufnahme…
Gatti ist Italiener und er bringt das auch in seine Interpretation ein. Sie ist flüssig, ungemein raffiniert im Klang und im Farbenspiel, vielleicht ein bisschen oberflächlich in der psychologischen Deutung, manchmal auch ein bisschen flach in der Dynamik, aber diese Einwände verlieren an Bedeutung, weil der symphonische Atem trotz eher langsamer Tempi vorhanden ist, und weil der Dirigent mit seinem Orchester eine Detailarbeit leistet, die hinreißend ist.Es gibt viel zu hören in dieser Aufnahme, die auf der Basis der neuen kritischen Edition der ‘Gilbert Kaplan Foundation’ erfolgte.
Karen Cargill ist mit ihrer nicht ganz stabilen Stimme sicher nicht die beste Besetzung für die Mezzopartie, aber ihre Leistung ist korrekt. Die Sopranistin Chen Reiss beeindruckt da schon mehr, und der Chor klingt großartig in diesem auch tontechnisch herausragenden Livemitschnitt.
With rather slow tempi, Daniele Gattis Second Mahler might not be among the tensest and the most profound performances recorded on disc, but the wonderful playing of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is so rich and detailed that in the really sumptuous sound of the surround recording the listener is able to experience a very good though not exceptional Second Mahler.
NB: Es gibt von dieser Aufführungsreihe auch ein SACD Hybrid-Album, das musikalisch der DVD leicht überlegen ist. Und auf der SACD singt Chen Reiss die Sopranpartie. Das ist ein bisschen verwirrend, denn auf beiden Trägern steht der 18. September als Aufnahmedatum. Von uns darauf angesprochen teilte der Pressesprecher des ‘Concertgebouw Orkest’ mit: « The soloists are indeed different: there were four concerts and on the fourth day Annette Dasch was indisposed. We felt the fourth performance as a whole was just a little bit better than the three before, but we had only video cameras at the second and third days. That’s the reason we chose to have the DVD/BD with Ms. Dasch and the 2 SACDs with Chen Reiss. Unfortunately the date on the DVD/BD is an error: it should have read 15/16 September. I apologize for the confusion this has caused! »
