The members of the Moscow Music Critics Association surprised by giving their Special Award to the last-placed pianist in the official list, yet one of the favourites of this year’s Tchaikovsky competition, 24 years old French pianist Lucas Debargue. According to the official statement, the « Prize of the association of music critics at the XV Moscow International Tchaikovsky Competition goes to a musician whose performances in the competition became a notable artistic event, and whose unique talent, creative freedom and beauty of musical interpretations have impressed the audience as well as the critics. »
Lucas Debargue has studied piano since the age of 11. He decided to give up his studies of literature and art to become a professional musician only when he was 20. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire (CNSMDP) in the class of Jean-François Heisser. He is currently taking instruction at the Ecole Normale de Musique Alfred Cortot in Paris under Prof. Rena Shereshevskaya. In 2014 he won the 9th International Adilia Alieva Piano Competition in Gaillard (France).
