Dieses Album präsentiert vier Klaviersonaten von Wolfang Amadeus Mozart in der Interpretation des 77-jährigen spanischen Pianisten Josep Maria Colom, wobei dieser zwischen den meisten Sätzen ein wie improvisiert klingendes Interlude spielt. Nur zwischen dem Andante und dem Rondo der 16. Sonate erklingt kein solches Interlude, so dass die Zahl der Stücke sich letztlich auf sieben beläuft.
Die Zwischenspiele sind zwischen einer knappen halben Minute bis zu etwas mehr als zwei Minuten lang und benutzen entweder Motive aus dem vorangegangenen Satz oder nehmen Ideen des folgenden vorweg, wobei, wie im Textheft sehr richtig vermerkt wird, « ein Gefühl der Erwartung entsteht, das der Musik, die so oft zuvor gespielt, gehört und aufgenommen wurde, eine neue Dimension verleiht. »
Doch das ist nicht das einzig Markante dieser Einspielung. Josep Colom zeigt sich in den vier Sonaten als ein relativ frei vorgehender Interpret, der die Musik mit eigenen Ideen belebt, freilich ohne über die Stränge zu schlagen und den Charakter der Musik zu verfälschen.
Wir sind also achtzig Minten lang in einem ganzen klaren Mozartklang, der bei allem Nuancieren von Tempi, Dynamik und Farben doch recht schlicht klingt. Coloms Spiel ist durch einen ebenso reifen wie spielerischen Ton gekennzeichnet; elegant, ohne Gehabe und ohne virtuose Ausbrüche, permanent fließend und irgendwie intimistisch in der Botschaft, die es vermittelt. Also: ein wirklich schönes Mozart-Recital!
This album presents four piano sonatas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart interpreted by the 77-year-old Spanish pianist Josep Maria Colom, who plays an improvised interlude between most of the movements. Only between the Andante and the Rondo of the 16th Sonata is there no such interlude, bringing the total number of pieces to seven.
The interludes range in length from just under half a minute to just over two minutes, and either use motifs from the previous movement or anticipate ideas from the following one, creating, as the booklet rightly notes, « a sense of anticipation that adds a new dimension to music that has been played, heard, and recorded so many times before ».
But that is not the only striking feature of this recording. In the four sonatas, Josep Colom shows himself to be a relatively free interpreter, enlivening the music with his own ideas, but without going overboard and distorting the character of the music.
For eighty minutes, we are immersed in a clear Mozart sound that, despite all the nuances of tempo, dynamics and color, sounds quite simple. Colom’s playing is characterized by a tone that is as mature as it is playful; elegant, without pretension or virtuoso outbursts, constantly flowing and somehow intimate in the message it conveys. In short, a truly beautiful Mozart recital!
