Floresta do Amazonas (Wald des Amazonas) von Heitor Villa Lobos (1887-1959) war zunächst die erfolglose Filmmusik für den Film Green Mansions von Mel Ferrer mit Audrey Hepburn und Anthony Perkins. Villa-Lobos hat das Material dann als eine Art Symphonie bearbeitet, die aber ebenso erfolglos blieb. Nun hat die Academia Brasileira de Música die Partitur überarbeitet und herausgegeben, und die italienisch-brasilianische Dirigentin Simone Menezes hat daraus eine Suite für Symphonieorchester und Sopran geschaffen. Das Projekt besteht auch aus Fotografien von Sebastiao Selgado, der sich für den Schutz und die Wiederherstellung des Regenwaldes und der Wasserressourcen im Tal des Rio Doce einsetzt, und beinhaltet Auszüge aus Philip Glass’ Aguas da Amazonia.
Die Villa-Lobos-Suite besteht aus 11 Sätzen (4 davon mit Sopran). Zehn Fotos von Salgado finden sich im Begleitheft zu diesem Album.
Eine hochkarätige Aufführung durch die Philharmonia Zürich und Simone Menezes und ein faszinierend stimmungsvoller Gesang der Sopranistin Camila Provenzale lassen dieses Programm attraktiv werden.
Floresta do Amazonas (Forest of the Amazon) by Heitor Villa Lobos (1887-1959) was initially the unsuccessful score for the film Green Mansions by Mel Ferrer, starring Audrey Hepburn and Anthony Perkins. Villa-Lobos then arranged the material as a symphony of sorts, but it was equally unsuccessful. Now the Academia Brasileira de Música has revised and published the score, and Italian-Brazilian conductor Simone Menezes has created a suite for symphony orchestra and soprano from it. The project also consists of photographs by Sebastiao Selgado, who works to protect and restore the rainforest and water resources of the Rio Doce Valley, and includes excerpts from Philip Glass’ Aguas da Amazonia.
The Villa-Lobos suite consists of 11 movements (4 of which feature soprano). Ten photographs by Salgado are included in the booklet accompanying this album.
A top-notch performance by the Philharmonia Zurich and Simone Menezes and a fascinatingly evocative vocal performance by soprano Camila Provenzale make this an attractive program.
