Pfeiler der Golden Gate-Brücke schmücken das Cover dieser CD. Sie stehen für die Harmonielehre von John Adams, ein Stück, das angeblich von einem surrealen Traum inspiriert wurde, in dem er auf der Brücke zwischen San Francisco und Oakland fuhr. Er sah einen Öltanker auf der Oberfläche des Wassers sich himmelwärts wenden und abheben wie eine Saturn-Rakete.

Nicht die Bilder an sich, sondern das Traumhafte scheint Nagano zu interessieren. Der Dirigent braucht zwar nur eine knappe Minute mehr als Michael Tilson Thomas und Simon Rattle, aber man hat den Eindruck, dass alles etwas länger dauert, weniger extrovertiert wirkt als bei den beiden genannten Interpreten. Davon profitieren die klanglichen Texturen, die manchmal ätherisch und verträumt, wenn nicht gar philosophisch wirken.

Nagano startet das CD-Programm mit Common Tones in Simple Time, Adams’ erstem Orchesterwerk, streng minimalistisch und doch hier ungemein fein nuanciert. Short Ride In a Fast Machine ist das dritte Stück, das Nagano ebenfalls sehr raffiniert aufbereitet.

Das Orchester aus Montreal spielt auf höchstem Niveau und die Tonaufnahme ist von vorbildlicher Räumlichkeit.

Pillars of the Golden Gate Bridge decorate the cover of this CD. They stand for Harmonielehre by John Adams, a piece allegedly inspired by a surreal dream in which the composer drove on the bridge between San Francisco and Oakland. He saw an oil tanker turn skywards on the surface of the water and take off like a Saturn rocket.
Nagano only needs a minute more than Michael Tilson Thomas and Simon Rattle, but you get the impression that everything takes a little longer and seems less extroverted than with the two other conductors. This serves the quality of the tonal textures, which sometimes seem ethereal and dreamy, if not philosophical.
Nagano starts the CD program with Common Tones in Simple Time, Adams’s first orchestral work. In this performance the strictly minimalistic amazes with incredibly fine nuances. Short Ride in a Fast Machine is the third piece, which Nagano also presents in a very refined way.
The orchestra from Montreal plays at the highest level and the sound recording is of exemplary spatiality.
