Die 20 Streichquartette des dänischen Komponisten Vagn Holmboe (1909-1996) sind einer der wichtigsten Beiträge zu diesem Genre im XX. Jahrhundert. Holmboe, den man den Leuchtturm der dänischen Musik genannt hat, bleibt leider immer noch weitgehend unbeachtet. Eigentlich unverständlich, doch bei genauem Hinhören erklärt sich das: Holmboe war nicht eben das, was man im XX. Jahrhundert einen modernen zeitgenössischen Komponisten nannte. Seinem fest in der nordischen Volksmusik verankerten Geist entsprang eine traditionsbewusste Musik, die aber durchaus ihre persönliche Sprache hat und auch sehr rhetorisch wirkt. Es ist eine klanglich eher helle, sehr elegante Musik ohne Selbstzweck-Charakter, auch wenn sie nicht die zwingende Kraft der Quartette eines Bartok oder eines Shostakovich erreicht.

Nach der Gesamtaufnahme mit dem Kontra Quartet beginnt Dacapo jetzt eine weitere Gesamteinspielung mit dem Nightingale String Quartet.

Die vier Musikerinnen spielen temperamentvoll und intensiv, aber auch mit viel Raffinement und Nuancierungskraft, so dass die Hauptmerkmale der Musik, Holmboes gut zum Tragen kommen. So kann der Zuhörer ohne pathetischen Beigeschmack die wirkungsvollen dramatischen Stellen ebenso auskosten wie die intimeren Passagen, die voller Poesie sind. Auffallend an den Interpretationen sind die klangliche Schönheit und die Vielfalt an Farben, die der Musik eine große innere Lebendigkeit geben.

The 20 string quartets by the Danish composer Vagn Holmboe (1909-1996) are one of the most important contributions to the genre in the 20th century. Holmboe, who has been called the lighthouse of Danish music, still remains largely unnoticed. This is actually incomprehensible, but a closer listen explains it: Holmboe was not exactly what was called a modern contemporary composer in the 20th century. His spirit, firmly anchored in Nordic folk music, gave rise to a tradition-conscious music, which, however, definitely has its own personal language and also has a very rhetorical effect. It is a tonally rather bright, very elegant music, even if it does not reach the compelling power of the quartets of a Bartok or a Shostakovich.
After the complete recording with the Kontra Quartet, Dacapo is now beginning another complete recording with the Nightingale String Quartet.
The four musicians play spiritedly and intensely but also with a great deal of refinement and nuance, thus very well shaping Holmboe’s music in which the listener will find the dramatic parts as appealing as the more intimate passages that are full of poetry without a pathetic aftertaste. What is striking about the interpretations is the tonal beauty and the variety of colours that give the music a great inner liveliness.
