Der kanadische Komponist Jan Järvlepp wurde 1953 als Sohn estnischer und finnischer Eltern in Ottawa geboren. Er komponiert in einem neoklassischen Stil. Navona hat seine Drei Märchen von Hans Christian mit dem Schauspieler Rob Dean als Erzähler aufgenommen. Zu dem neu adaptierten Text hat Järvlepp eine narrative Musik komponiert, die die von Rob Dean eindringlich erzählten Märchen atmosphärisch untermalt.
Follow The Leader wurde im Rahmen des innovativen Making Music Project komponiert, einer Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Ottawa-Carleton District School Board und der Universität von Ottawa. Jävlapp sagt: « Im Rahmen dieses Projekts traf ich mich einige Male mit einer Klasse von Musikschülern, bevor ich mein Stück komponierte. Ich habe sie gefragt, was sie gerne komponieren würden. Bei unserem nächsten Treffen erfuhr ich, dass sie keine Stücke mochten, in denen alle die ganze Zeit spielten. Sie schlugen ein Stück mit deutlichen Kontrasten zwischen den verschiedenen Abteilungen der Band sowie einige Frage-Antwort-Strukturen vor. Das brachte mich auf die Idee, ein ‘Follow the Leader’-Stück zu komponieren, bei dem die Schlagzeuger die Anführer sein würden. »
Auch das nächste Stück ist ein musikpädagogisches Werk. Jeder Satz der Suite for Strings ist der Entwicklung einer bestimmten Fähigkeit gewidmet: « Der erste Satz, Changing Times, lehrt die Schüler, schnell und effektiv von einer Taktart in eine andere zu wechseln. Shifting Cargo ist eine verdeckte Übung für den Wechsel. A Thoughtful Moment konzentriert sich auf die Entwicklung eines ausdrucksstarken Vibratos, wobei den Bass- und Bratschengruppen Soli gegeben werden, da sie normalerweise beim Solospiel zugunsten der Violin- und Cellogruppen ausgelassen werden. Auch die Louré-Bogenführung wird den Schülern näher gebracht. Dance of the Monkey Man ist rhythmusorientiert und schult die Fähigkeit, Synkopen oder Offbeats, wie sie in der Popmusik bekannt sind, zu spielen. »
Mithin bietet diese CD ein Programm, das sich erfolgreich in der Linie der musikpädagogischen Stücke etabliert und diese Gattung um wertvolle Beiträge erweitert.

Navona recorded his Three Fairy Tales by Hans Christian with actor Rob Dean as narrator. Järvlepp has composed narrative music to accompany the newly adapted text, which provides an atmospheric backdrop to the fairy tales hauntingly narrated by Rob Dean.
Follow The Leader was composed as part of the innovative Making Music Project, a collaboration between the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board and the University of Ottawa. Jävlapp says, « As part of this project, I met with a class of music students a few times before composing my piece. I asked them what they would like me to compose. At our next meeting, I learned that they disliked pieces where everybody played all the time. They suggested a piece with distinct contrasts between different sections of the band as well as some question and answer types of textures. That gave me the idea of composing a ‘follow the leader’ type of piece where the percussion players would be the leaders. »
The next piece is also a music education piece.
Each movement of Suite for Strings is dedicated to developing a specific skill: « The first movement, Changing Times, teaches the students to change from one time signature to another rapidly and effectively. Shifting Cargo is a shifting exercise in disguise. A Thoughtful Moment concentrates on developing expressive vibrato with solos given to the bass and viola sections since they are usually left out of solo playing in favor of the violin and cello sections. The louré bowing style is also introduced to the students. Dance of the Monkey Man is rhythm-oriented and cultivates skill in playing syncopations, or offbeats as they are known in pop music. »
Consequently, this CD offers a program that successfully establishes itself in the line of music education pieces and adds valuable contributions to this genre.
