Nicholas Angelich spielt auf dieser ganzen Prokofiev-CD zunächst eine der interessantesten Sonaten von Prokofiev, seine Achte, die dritte Kriegssonate. Angelich verdeutlicht darin Prokofievs innere Trauer, aber auch sein Bemühen, mit Leichtigkeit die Situation angenehmer zu gestalten. Dabei spürt Angelich mit untrüglichem Gefühl des Komponisten Sinn für Klang und Farbe nach. Der Aufbau des Werkes ist kohärent und schlüssig.

In den riskanten Visions Fugitives gelingt dem Pianisten eine sehr persönliche, sehr intimistische Interpretation voller Feingefühl. Angelichs Anschlagskultur kann nicht genug gerühmt werden.

Die Auszüge aus dem Ballett Romeo und Julia (Die Straße erwacht, Ankunft der Gäste, Julia als junges Mädchen, Montagues and Capulets, Romeo und Julia) inszeniert Angelich als romantische Szenen, sehr stimmungsvoll, sehr schön und in der letzten Szenen direkt idyllisch.

Und so ist diese CD ein 79 Minuten langes Programm mit feinem, zartem und zartestem, oft verträumten und verinnerlichten Prokofiev, fern aller Motorik und Strahlkraft, die die andere Seite des Komponisten charakterisieren.

Nicholas Angelich plays on this entire Prokofiev CD first one of Prokofiev’s most interesting sonatas, his Eighth, the third war sonata. In it, Angelich illustrates Prokofiev’s inner sadness, but also his efforts to make the situation more pleasant with lightness and charm. In doing so, Angelich traces the composer’s sense of sound and color with unerring sensitivity. The structure of the work is always coherent and conclusive.
In the risky Visions Fugitives, the pianist succeeds in a very personal, very intimate interpretation full of sensitivity. Angelich’s fine technique of touch cannot be praised enough.
Angelich plays the excerpts from the ballet Romeo and Juliet (The Street Awakens, Arrival of the Guests, Juliet as a Young Girl, Montagues and Capulets, Romeo and Juliet) as romantic scenes, very atmospheric, very beautiful, and in the last scene directly idyllic.
And so this CD is a 79-minute program of fine, delicate and tender, often dreamy and interiorized Prokofiev, far from all the motoric drive and power that characterizes many of the composer’s works.
