Nicholas Carter

The 39-year-old Australian conductor Nicholas Carter will become General Music Director of the Stuttgart State Opera and the Stuttgart State Orchestra from the 2026/27 season. Carter succeeds Cornelius Meister, whose contract expires after eight years.
Carter has been Chief Conductor and Co-Opera Director of Bern Opera since 2021. After holding positions as Kapellmeister at the Staatsoper Hamburg and the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Carter was Chief Conductor of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra from 2016 to 2019. From 2018 to 2021, he was Chief Conductor of the Klagenfurt State Theater and the Carinthian Symphony Orchestra.
