Warum? Von Gershwins Porgy and Bess gibt es wirklich gute Gesamtaufnahmen. Warum also eine CD mit bloß Highlights veröffentlichen, die zudem alles andere als zufriedenstellend ist?
Das Beste daran ist der Morgan State University Choir, und was Marin Alsop an Details aus dem Orchester herausnimmt, ist ebenfalls bemerkenswert. Ihr Dirigat trägt auch dem Drama vollauf Rechnung.
Angel Blue singt die Bess zwar sehr engagiert, aber ich finde ihre Stimme ist zu groß und nicht jugendlich genug für die Rolle. Lester Lynchs Porgy ist nicht besonders ausdrucksvoll, und Kevin Shorts schlecht artikulierende Stimme ist in den Rollen des Crown und Jake nicht wirklich attraktiv. Chauncey Packer hingegen gefällt mit seinem leichten und wenigen Tenor als Sportin’ Life.
Why? There are really good complete recordings of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. So why release a CD of highlights that is also anything but satisfying?
The best of it is the Morgan State University Choir, and what Marin Alsop gets out of the orchestra is also remarkable. Her conducting does full justice to the drama.
Angel Blue sings Bess with great commitment, but I think her voice is too big and not youthful enough for the role. Lester Lynch’s Porgy is not particularly expressive, and Kevin Short’s poorly articulating voice is not really attractive in the roles of Crown and Jake. Chauncey Packer, on the other hand, pleases with his light and few tenor as Sportin’ Life.
