Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) komponierte 53 Opern und Ballette, von denen die Oper Der Postillon von Lonjumeau und das Ballett Giselle bekannt sind. Orfa war Adams vorletztes Ballett. Es basiert auf der nordischen Mythologie und thematisiert den Kampf zwischen dem älteren Gott Loki und den jüngeren Odin, in den die jungen Verliebten Orfa und Lodbrog hineingezogen werden, wobei am Ende alles sich zum Guten wendet.
Orfa wird hier in Weltersteinspielung vorgelegt. Dirigent Darius Salvi verwendet Adams Originalmanuskript, das sich in der Bibliothèque nationale de France befindet. Das phantasievoll komponierte Ballett verbreitet mehr lieblichen Charme als Drama. Vom etwas behäbig musizierenden Orchester hätte man sich mehr eleganten Schwung gewünscht.
Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) composed 53 operas and ballets, of which the opera The Postillon of Lonjumeau and the ballet Giselle are well known. Orfa was Adam’s penultimate ballet. It is based on Norse mythology and deals with the struggle between the older god Loki and the younger Odin, in which the young lovers Orfa and Lodbrog are drawn into, although everything turns out well in the end.
Orfa is presented here in world premiere recording. Conductor Darius Salvi uses Adam’s original manuscript, stored in the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The imaginatively composed ballet spreads more lovely charm than drama. One would have wished for more elegant verve from the somewhat ponderous orchestra.
