Der 1956 in Rumänien geborene und seit zwei Jahrzehnten in Großbritannien lebende Calin Huma schreibt eine Musik, die neo-romantisch sowie tonal ist und ihren Melodienreichtum aus der Volksmusik seines Geburtslandes bezieht.

Mit ihrer osteuropäischen Färbung ist die Erste Symphonie ein dreisätziges Tongemälde der Karpaten, stilistisch deutlich vor Enescu anzusiedeln und durchgehend auf einem leichten und unterhaltsamen Tonfall, d.h. ohne irgendwelchen Tiefgang. Die Musik ist gefällig und wird vom BBC National Orchestra of Wales auf solidem Niveau aufgeführt.

Symphony-Concerto für Klavier und Orchester ist genauso nostalgisch einer längst vergangenen Klangwelt zuzurechnen. Das Stück klingt wie Rachmaninov, ohne dessen handwerkliches Niveau zu erreichen. Der Gebrauch gefälliger Harmonien und großer romantischer Gesten durch den Komponisten erklärt, warum das Konzert Anhänger finden mag. Für mich ist das Ganze etwas seicht.

Calin Huma, who was born in Romania in 1956 and has been living in Great Britain for two decades, writes music that is neo-romantic as well as tonal, drawing its melodic richness from the folk music of his native country.
With its Eastern European colouring, the First Symphony is a three-movement tonal painting of the Carpathians, stylistically clearly placed before Enescu and consistently on a light and entertaining tone, i.e. without any depth. The music is pleasing and is performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales at a solid level.
The Symphony-Concerto for piano and orchestra is just as nostalgic for a long gone sound world. The piece sounds like Rachmaninov, without reaching the Russian’s level of craftsmanship. The composer’s use of pleasing harmonies and grand romantic gestures explains why the concerto may find followers. For me, the whole thing is somewhat shallow.
