The Estonian National Symphony Orchestra has appointed Estonian conductor Olari Elts, 48, as its next Music Director. He will succeed Neeme Järvi – who will take on the title Honorary Conductor For Life – from the 2020-21 season.
Elts has been Principal Guest Conductor since 2007. He is also Artistic Advisor of the Kymi Sinfonietta. He was Principal Guest Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra from 2011-2014, Artistic Advisor of the Orchestre de Bretagne from 2006-2011, Principal Guest Conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra from 2007-2010 and Chief Conductor of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra from 2001-2006. Born in Tallinn in 1971, Elts is founder of his contemporary music ensemble, NYYD Ensemble.
