French-Nigerian soprano Omo Bello won First Prize in the general category, First Prize for the French 19th century opera repertoire and the Audience Award at the Third Paris Opera Competition. In the general category, the second Prize was awarded to the baritone Johan Choir, Korea, while Russian mezzo-soprano Maria Kataeva received the 3rd prize. Choi is also the winner of the Audience Prize for the best male singer.
Omo Bello already won the 1st Prize in the Luciano Pavarotti Giovani 2010 Competition. She became a laureate of the Cziffra Foundation in 2011 and she was also awarded with Italy’s prestigious international ‘Arca d’Oro’ prize for young artists in 2013.
In Pizzicato’s last print edition (December 2013) Remy Franck wrote about her CD swith Mahler songs (Eloquentia): « La jeune cantatrice franco-nigériane Omo Bello a une voix brillante, avec un timbre des plus agréables et une projection étonnante. Elle surprend avec son premier disque entièrement consacré à Gustav Mahler, chantant 14 mélodies de ‘Des Knaben Wunderhorn’, dont certaines très connues, d’autres moins. Pour chaque pièce elle trouve la juste expression, alternant entre joie et tristesse, passion et tendresse, avec une voix tantôt émouvante de retenue ou au contraire fascinante d’éclat. Le texte qu’elle a certainement compris à fond, est restitué de façon à en permettre une bonne compréhension, la diction allemande de Bello étant remarquable. La ligne vocale est excellente et souple, l’émission bien balancée, tant dans les aigus que dans les graves, très présents. Nous ne pouvons donc que recommander au lecteur de découvrir cette superbe voix qui atteint, grâce à une palette de couleurs richement fournie et des moyens expressifs abondants, une expression chaleureuse et toujours naturelle. »
