Der französisch-englische Komponist Georges Onslow (1784-1853) hat ein beeindruckendes Oeuvre auf dem Gebiet der Kammermusik aufzuweisen. Besonders seine Quintette stehen noch häufig auf den Konzertprogrammen und etliche davon wurden auch schon aufgenommen. Nun hat er aber 34 Stücke dieser Gattung komponiert, und populär sind nur einige wenige. Es gibt davon solche mit zwei Bratschen und andere mit zwei Celli. Die beiden, die auf dieser CD gespielt werden, fügen zu Violine, Bratsche und Cello noch den Kontrabass hinzu. Es gibt sie freilich auch für andere Besetzungen, da Onslow gerne mehrere Versionen anbot, wohl um mehr Geld zu verdienen.

Die zwei Quintette werden in den schnelleren Sätzen elegant schwung- und kraftvoll gestaltet, während die langsameren Sätze phantasievoll und atmosphärisch dicht gespielt werden.   Die Interpreten beweisen einen guten Sinn für Farbe, Lyrismus und klangliche Ausgewogenheit.

The French-English composer Georges Onslow (1784-1853) produced an impressive oeuvre in the field of chamber music. His quintets in particular are still frequently on concert programs and quite a few of them have been recorded. Now, however, he composed 34 pieces of this genre, and only a few are really popular. There are some with two violas and others with two cellos. The two that are played on this CD add the double bass to the violin, viola and cello. Admittedly, they are also available for other instrumentations, since Onslow liked to offer several versions, probably to make more money.
The two quintets are elegantly sweeping and powerful in the faster movements, while the slower movements are played imaginatively and atmospherically. The performers demonstrate a good sense of color, lyricism and tonal balance.
