So wie es Konzerte gibt, die einen von der ersten Minute an faszinieren, so gibt es auch Aufnahmen, die einen als Hörer einfach ab dem ersten Takt packen und bis zum Schluss nicht mehr loslassen. Odyssey ist ein solches Album und dabei spielen die beiden Musiker nicht einmal populäre Stücke.
Mit Mythes op. 30 von Karol Szymanowski, der Sonate op. 11 /1 von Paul Hindemith und der Sonata für Violine und Klavier von John Corigliano sowie Aria von Kevin Puts präsentieren Cosima Soulez Larivière, Violine und Philip Scheucher, Klavier recht komplexe und manchmal sogar sperrige Werke. Doch ihr Spiel ist so intensiv und voller Begeisterung, dass es dem Hörer leichtfällt, die Künstler auf ihrem Interpretationsweg zu begleiten.
Sowohl Soulez-Larivière wie auch Scheucher entpuppen sich als herausragende Techniker und engagierte Interpreten, die nicht nur der Musik auf den Grund gehen und sie von innen nach außen kehren sondern zudem als Doppel sehr gut funktionieren. Gerade bei so komplexen Werken wie Mythes oder der Corogliano-Sonate ist es wichtig, sich als Interpreten auf einen konsequenten, lebendigen und ehrlichen Dialog einzulassen. Dies passiert hier in jedem Moment, ohne nachzulassende Intensität spielen sich die beiden Musiker die Bälle zu und lassen den Hörer an ihrem beseelten und eigentlich leicht zu verstehenden Dialog teilhaben, eine Kommunikation, die auch sofort zum Kern der Musik vordringt, sei das bei Szymanowski, Corogliano, Hindemith oder bei der kurzen Aria von Puts.
Dank der hervorragenden Klangtechnik von Gramola und dem natürlichen, offenen Klang ist dieses Album eine Offenbarung und ein Must für jeden Liebhaber von Kammermusik.
Just as there are concerts that fascinate you from the first minute, there are recordings that grab you from the first bar and don’t let go until the end. Odyssey is such an album, and the two musicians don’t even play popular pieces.
With Mythes op. 30 by Karol Szymanowski, the Sonata op. 11/1 by Paul Hindemith and the Sonata for Violin and Piano by John Corigliano, as well as Aria by Kevin Puts, Cosima Soulez Larivière, violin, and Philip Scheucher, piano, present rather complex and sometimes even unwieldy works. However, their playing is so intense and enthusiastic that it is easy for the listener to accompany the artists on their interpretive journey.
Both Soulez-Larivière and Scheucher prove to be technically outstanding and committed interpreters who not only get to the bottom of the music and turn it upside down, but also work very well as a duo. Especially in such complex works as the Mythes or the Corogliano Sonata, it is important for the performers to engage in a consistent, lively and honest dialogue. The two musicians pass the ball to each other without any loss of intensity, allowing the listener to participate in their animated and actually easy to understand dialogue, a communication that immediately penetrates to the core of the music, be it Szymanowski, Corogliano, Hindemith or the short aria by Puts.
Thanks to Gramola’s excellent sound engineering and the natural, open sound, this album is a revelation and a must for every lover of chamber music.
