Naxos – das ist die unglaublichste Erfolgsstory des Klassik-Plattengeschäfts überhaupt. In nur 10 Jahren – die Firma wurde 1987 von Klaus Heymann in Hong Kong gegründet – eroberte sie phänomenale Marktanteile (17 % in England, 70% in Norwegen) und etablierte sich weltweit als führendes Klassik-Label. Mit über 2.000 CDs hat Naxos auch den bei weitem umfangreichsten Katalog, mit Werken vom frühen Mittelalter bis zur zeitgenössischen Musik. In diesem Katalog finden sich viele Raritäten, die sonst nirgends verlegt worden sind. Die niedrigen Verkaufspreise machen die Naxos-Platten natürlich auch attraktiv. Und so kommt es, dass Naxos 25.000 CDs eines so marginalen Produkts wie die Boulez-Klaviersonaten verkaufen konnte, 20.000 Mal die Lutoslawski-Symphonien und 15.000 Mal Messiaens ‘Vingt regards sur l’Enfant Jésus’. Das anfangs von sogenannten Kennern belächelte Label verkauft heute 16 Millionen Klassik-CDs im Jahr. Und selbst wenn Naxos nicht die großen Stars unter Vertrag hat, so erhält das in Cannes zum Label des Jahres gekürte Unternehmen in den Schallplattenmagazinen oft hervorragende Kritiken.
Heymann, seit 1974 mit der japanischen Geigerin Takako Nishizaki verheiratet, ist Firmenchef, Produzent und künstlerischer Leiter in einer Person. After 18 years as Music Director of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra (Michigan, US) Raymond Harvey will step down at the end of the 2016-17 concert season. He will then take the title of music director emeritus. Harvey will continue teaching as associate professor and music director of the Moores Opera Center at the University of Houston. The KSO will organise a search committee to find Harvey’s successor. «

The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra (NY) has named Australian conductor Russell Ger Music Director following a two-year search that involved more than 100 candidates. He is succeeding Woomyung Choe, who founded the orchestra in 1995 and led it for 20 years. Ger is currently the Music Director of the Park East Synagogue in New York City.
