Plácido Domingo who made his New York debut in 1965 as Pinkerton in Puccini’s ‘Madama Butterfly’ at the now closed City Opera will sing at a benefit concert celebrating the 70^th anniversary of the company’s founding. Domingo has agreed to join other veterans of the troupe, its orchestra and its chorus, at a concert, ’70 Years of the People’s Opera,’ on Feb. 21 at City Center. The nickname ‘People’s Opera’ came from NY Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia, who was one of the instigators of the company whose first performance – Puccini’s ‘Tosca’ – took place at City Center on the same date in 1944. Read More →

The ‘Yorkshire Festival’ has announced that ‘Hebden Bridge Piano Festival’ and ‘Imove’ are working together to create ‘The Grand Departs’, an epic musical and physical feat of strength and endurance, to celebrate the Tour de France’s visit to Yorkshire. On April 5 a team of Calderdale’s most resilient cyclists will pull a grand piano from Mytholmroyd up Cragg Vale Road to the top of Blackstone Edge. This is the longest continuous ascent in England and has been included in the Tour de France route through Yorkshire as a particularly grueling feature of the race. Read More →

Bad times for conductors: after Mariss Jansons and Daniele Gatti, William Christie (69) had to undergo a ‘preventive’ surgery and should stay in hospital for at least two weeks. So he had to cancel a new production of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s ‘Platée’ at ‘Theater an der Wien’ in Vienna. He will be replaced by Paul Agnew, the Associate Director of ‘Les Arts Florissants’.

Due to a tendinopathy, an acute inflammation of the tendon of both shoulders, Italian conductor Daniele Gatti has canceled all his professional engagements for the next two months, thus following the advice of his doctors. This affects essentially concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic in Austria and in New York as well as performances of the Vienna State Opera.

Während es Riccardo Muti gelang, Claudio Abbados ‘Orchestra Mozart’ für ein Konzert beim Festival von Ravenna im Sommer 2014 wiederzubeleben, sagt das ‘Lucerne Festival’ das für den 7. April 2014 geplante Konzert mit diesem Orchester ersatzlos ab. Das ‘Orchestra Mozart’ hatte im Januar kommuniziert, seine Tätigkeit aufgrund finanzieller Schwierigkeiten vorerst einzustellen. ‘Lucerne Festival’ hat laut einer Pressemitteilung in den vergangenen Wochen in Würdigung des ehemaligen Künstlerischen Leiters Claudio Abbado alles unternommen, um das Konzert doch noch zur Aufführung zu bringen, leider ergebnislos.

Polish conductor Antoni Wit, born February 7, 1944, in Krakow has celebrated his 70^th birthday, with two weekend concerts with the Warsaw Philharmonic. The program included Brahms’ ‘Schicksalslied’, Richard Strauss’ ‘Alpensinfonie’ and Karol Szymanowski’s ‘Stabat Mater’. Wit served as Managing and Artistic Director of the Warsaw Philharmonic from 2002 to 2013. Currently he is Music Director of the ‘Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra ‘in Pamplona. Wit’s discography includes more than 200 records, many of which have received awards, and he is one of the world’s few artists to have sold his records in nearly five million copies.

Mariss Jansons kämpft erneut mit gesundheitlichen Problemen. Nach einem längerfristig geplanten medizinischen Eingriff wurde dem Dirigenten von seinen Ärzten eine Erholungsphase empfohlen. Daher muss er seine Konzerte mit dem Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks am 20., 21. und 22. Februar 2014 absagen. Wie der Bayerische Rundkunk mitteilte, übernimmt Jonathan Nott die Leitung der Konzerte. Mariss Jansons wird jedoch die für den 27. und 28. Februar 2014 angesetzten Konzerte mit Werken von Richard Strauss und John Adams wie geplant dirigieren.

Wie Pizzicato bereits angedeutet hatte (bolton-favorit-furs-teatro-real-madrid/), wird der britische Dirigent Ivor Bolton ab der Saison 2015/16 die musikalische Leitung des Madrider Opernhauses übernehmen. Der 55-Jährige werde einen Fünfjahresvertrag unterzeichnen, teilte das ‘Teatro Real’ mit. Bolton ist der Nachfolger von Jesús López Cobos.

Die Staatskapelle Berlin hat Zubin Mehta (77) zu ihrem Ehrendirigenten ernannt. Nach einem Konzert mit dem Pianisten und Chefdirigenten der Staatskapelle, Daniel Barenboim, am Montagabend in der Berliner Philharmonie, ehrte das Orchester Mehta mit der Ernennung. Mehta habe seit 1995 die Staatskapelle bei 28 Opernvorstellungen und 14 Konzerten dirigiert, verlautete vom Orchester, das von ihm auch in kulturpolitischen Auseinandersetzungen um den Erhalt der Staatsoper ‘Unter den Linden’ im Jahr 2000 unterstützt worden sei.
