Paris based ‘Théâtre du Chatelet’ will show another musical by Stephen Sondheim in this season, none other than ‘Into the Woods’. From April 1^st to April 12, David Charles Abell will conduct this beautiful piece in a staging by Lee Blakeley. Renata Scotto

Die Opernsängerin Renata Scotto wird heute 80 Jahre alt. Sie gilt neben Renata Tebaldi und Mirella Freni als eine der bedeutendsten italienischen Sopranistinnen in der 2. Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Nach ihrem Gesangsstudium in Mailand debütierte Scotto 1954 als Violetta Valéry in ‘La Traviata’ am Mailänder ‘Teatro Nuovo’. The oldest Holocaust survivor and the oldest active pianist in the world, Alice Sommer-Herz, has died today in London. The turned 110 in November 2013. Alice Herz and her twin sister Mariana were born in Prague in the 26^th of November 1903. Alice studied the piano and at 18 she was already performing in recitals and as soloist in concerts with the Czech Philharmonic. The critics wrote excitedly about the young pianist. Read More →

The last member of the Trapp Family Singers, the group whose story inspired the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical ‘The Sound of Music’, has died at the age of 99 in Vermont (USA). She was the last of the surviving members of the seven children of Georg von Trapp and his first wife. The three children he had later with Maria Augusta Kutschera, the initiator of the choir, are still in life.

Shortly after highly successful concerts in Qatar and before conducing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Zagreb Philharmonic in Croatia, Dmitrij Kitajenko accepted to take the baton at Copenhagen’s Koncerthuset for two concerts with the Danish National Orchestra, March 6 and 8. Franz Liszt

In Thüringen wird im Mai 2015 erstmals ein landesweites Liszt-Festival stattfinden. Mit einem fünftägigen Programm würdigt die ‘Liszt-Biennale Thüringen’ das Wirken und Schaffen des Komponisten und Klaviervirtuosen Franz Liszt. Der Schwerpunkt des fünftägigen Festivals im Mai 2015 werde in Meiningen liegen, teilte das Kulturministerium mit. Konzerte, Ausstellungen und Vorträge zu Franz Liszt (1811-1886) und anderen großen Komponisten sind außerdem in Eisenach und Altenburg sowie in Weimar geplant, wo Liszt 1848 Hofkapellmeister wurde und bis 1861 lebte.

Der 60-jährige deutsche Pianist, Kunsthistoriker, Philosoph und promovierte Musikwissenschafter wird Rektor der Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg. Er hat sich « mit klarer Mehrheit » etwas überraschend gegen den Favoriten und aktuellen Rektor Reinhart von Gutzeit durchgesetzt. Mauser wird sein Amt am 1. Oktober antreten. The Namur Chamber Choir has signed a new contract with his artistic director, Leonardo García-Alarcón, running through 2018. For this new period of collaboration, the 38 years old Argentinean conductor is getting better conditions, since the choir is joined by a totally new baroque orchestra called Millennium. Among his projects are the Requiem by Rubino, Masses by J.S. Bach, the creation of the Saint John’s Passion by Gaetano Veneziano, the Missa Santa Caecilia by Alessandro Scarlatti as well as Handel’s Coronation Anthems.
