Unter dem vielsagenden Titel ‘Wirklich wichtig sind die Schuhe’ erscheint am 11. November die erste Autobiographie der lettischen Mezzosopranistin Elina Garanca, herausgegeben vom Ecowin Verlag. Darin schildert die Sängerin ihre Kindheit und ihren Weg in die Welt des Gesangs. Gleichzeitig mit dieser Veröffentlichung verabschiedet sich Garanca in ihre Mutterzeit. Sie erwartet ihr zweites Kind.

French newspaper ‘Le Figaro’ reports that pianist Lang Lang will start some day with composing. He told them that he is already improvising a loot, which he considers being the first step into composition.

At the age of 75, Zarin Mehta, the former president of the New York Philharmonic, has been appointed as executive director at the Green Music Center, Sonoma State University (100 km North of San Francisco). Mehta will share the title with Larry Furukawa-Schlereth, the university’s chief financial officer. Zarin Mehta is the brother of conductor Zubin Mehta.

Martin Lebel

French conductor Martin Lebel has been appointed as Music Director at ‘Filarmonica de Montevideo’ in Uruguay, and he takes his post immediately. Winner of the First Prize at the Prokofiev International Competition in St-Petersburg in 2003 and of the third prize at the Mitropoulos International Competition in 1998, he was assistant of James Conlon for his productions with the Gürzenich Orchester in Cologne and at the Opera Bastille. Since 2009 Martin Lebel is Music Director of the Karlovy Vary Philharmonic (Czech Republic).

Von der Freiheit darf man in China selbst nicht mehr singen. Der Dresdner Kreuzchor hat das Lied ‘Die Gedanken sind frei» für seine China-Tournee vom Programm gestrichen. Alle Liedtexte des Chors waren vorab der chinesischen Zensurbehörde als Übersetzung vorgelegt worden. Die veranstaltende Konzertagentur empfahl von vorneherein, das Freiheitslied aus dem 18. Jahrhundert, in dem vom ‘dunklen Kerker’ und Gedankenfreiheit die Rede ist, zu streichen.

Launched this year, the global ‘Music Against Child Labour Initiative’ links the ‘International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour’ (IPEC) with famous conductors, musicians and musicians’ organizations. The Initiative’s Manifesto calls on orchestras, choirs and musicians of all genres worldwide to dedicate one concert from now one until December 2014 to the struggle against child labour. Under the auspices of ‘Fondation de Luxembourg’, Luxembourg’s National Cultural Fund (Focuna) will shortly offer a series of scholarships for young musicians from Luxembourg and Europe. The objective is to favor research, creation and improvement by allowing the artists to have the necessary resources for their activities.
