The American ‘National Endowment for the Arts’ has published a Survey of Public Participation in the Arts for 2012. The figures show that attendance declined for traditional cultural forms – theater, museums and classical concerts – between 2008, the previous survey period, and 2012. Classical music audiences declined from 9.3 percent of adults in 2008 to 8.8 percent in 2012. They also grew older: Adults ages 35 to 54 reduced their attendance while those 65 and up participated at the highest levels (in 2008, the 55-plus crowd accounted for 33.5 percent of audiences; in 2012 they were 36 percent).
The Minnesota Orchestra has made an new offer to its locked-out musicians Thursday. It proposes more money in form of bonuses. The board asked the musicians for a vote before the offer expires at noon Monday. Music Director Osmo Vänskä has said he needs musicians rehearsing next week to prepare for November concerts at Carnegie Hall. If those concerts are canceled, Vänskä has said he would resign.
After abruptly dismissing Gérard Mortier as Artistic Director, Madrid’s Teatro Real has created a new advisory post for him. Mortier was due to remain as artistic director until 2016, but was replaced by Joan Matabosch. There is no information about the exact nature of Mortier’s new advisory role, nor about the Belgians’ salary. Mortier is currently undoing a cancer treatment in Germany.
Gustavo Dudamel eröffnet mit einheimischen Kindern und Jugendlichen die erste Durchführung von ‘Lucerne Festival Ark Nova’ im japanischen Matsushima. Das vom Schweizer Festival lancierte Projekt hat zum Ziel, einen Beitrag zum Wiederaufbau der von der großen Katastrophe vom 11. März 2011 betroffenen Region im Nordosten Japans zu leisten. Als Spiel- und Begegnungsort für Künstler und Bevölkerung dient vom 27. September bis 13. Oktober 2013 eine vom britischen Künstler Anish Kapoor und vom japanischen Architekten Arata Isozaki entwickelte aufblasbare und mobile Konzerthalle.

New York City Opera’s board decided on Thursday to start bankruptcy proceedings next week in the case it fails to raise $7 million by next Monday. Since it seems unlikely that the fundraising can bring $5,5 in such a short period (NYCO got only $1,5 in several weeks), bankruptcy is the most probable way. Called ‘the people’s opera’ by Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia when it was founded 70 years ago, NYCO lets fall the curtain on a glorious past. However, since 2003, it has accumulated deficits and considerably reduced the artistic output.

Bechstein will das Klavierspiel auf breiter Ebene, vor allem aber bei Kindern und Jugendlichen fördern. Dazu wurde eine Stiftung gegründet, die nun ihre Arbeit aufgenommen hat: Zahlreiche Berliner Schulen haben von der Stiftung in den letzten Wochen kostenlos ein Klavier zur Verfügung gestellt bekommen, das genauso bei musikalischen Aufführungen wie beim Klavierunterricht eingesetzt wird. French pianist Philippe Bianconi (53) has been named Director of the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau. He is the successor of pianist Philippe Entremont who hold the position from 1994. Hornisten sind unter den Musikern am wenigstens gegen Hörschäden gefeit. Das ergab eine Studie der australischen Universitäten von Queensland und Sidney, die im ‘Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene (JOEH)’ veröffentlicht wurde. Bei 11 bis 22 Prozent der untersuchten Hornisten seien unterschiedlich ausgeprägte Gehörschäden festgestellt worden. Die Studie rät allen Hornisten beim Spielen immer einen Gehörschutz zu tragen.
