American cellist Alisa Weilerstein (31) and Venezuelan conductor Rafael Payare (33) married yesterday evening at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts in Katonah, (N.Y.) Another ceremony is planned next Sunday, August 24, in Venezuela at Ranchos de Chana on Isla de Margarita. According to a news published in the New York Times, both ceremonies incorporate Jewish elements.

Another British orchestra, Lancashire Sinfonietta, is facing an uncertain time following the announcement 80% cut to Arts funding by Lancashire County Council (LCC). Without deciding a final closure, the Orchestra’s Board decided to suspend its planned programme for the coming season 2013/14.

In Dresden hat der Solotubist der Dresdner Philharmonie, Jörg Wachsmuth, Rimski-Korsakovs ‘Hummelflug’ auf einer Riesen-Tuba in 53,82 Sekunden gespielt und damit einen neuen Weltrekord aufgestellt. Earlier this month, the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra (UK) launched an emergency appeal (read the pizzicato article here) to raise  £70.000, an amount necessary to avoid insolvency. It has now almost reached its goal, with the donations totalizing so far £60.000.

Einen Verdacht auf ‘Untreue’ gebe es in der jetzt zur Gerichtssache angewachsenen Affäre um die Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie in Konstanz. In diese hat sich jetzt nämlich, einem Bericht des ‘Südkuriers’ zufolge, die Staatsanwaltschaft eingeschaltet. Kernstück der Affäre ist zurzeit der Prüfbericht der baden-württembergischen Gemeindeprüfungsanstalt, die das Defizit des Orchesters untersuchte, das sich auf 700 000 Euro beläuft. Dieses wurde unter dem vorigen Intendanten Riem erwirtschaftet, offenbar ohne, dass dies von den Kontrollgremien und den Politikern richtig wahrgenommen wurde.

Former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell is currently leading negotiations between the management and the locked out musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra. This week, the mediator made a proposal to soften the potential downside for musicians to engage in bargaining, according to the musicians’ negotiating committee.
