The Minnesota Orchestra will not record Symphonies No 3 and 6 by Jean Sibelius in September. Minnesota Public Radio reports that the Swedish recording company BIS has postponed the session since the Orchestra is not prepared for those sessions due to the lockout of the musicians since October 2012. The recording was supposed to be conducted by Music Director Osmo Vänskä.
The winners of the 2014 Gilmore Young Artist Award are 19-year-old Curtis Institute of Music graduate Andrew Hsu and 16-year-old Juilliard School student Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner. Both pianists receive a $15,000 stipend, as well as $10,000 to commission a new piano composition for which the artist will have exclusive performance rights for one year. Read More →
During a concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall last week, with 17 musicians from the Palestine Strings, soloist Nigel Kennedy compared the situation in Israel to apartheid in South Africa. « Ladies and gentlemen, it’s a bit facile to say it but we all know from experiencing this night of music tonight that giving equality and getting rid of apartheid means there’s a chance for amazing things to happen, » Kennedy was quoted by ‘Al Arabiya’ as having said. The BBC will air this concert on August 23 without the political comments.

American cellist Alisa Weilerstein (31) and Venezuelan conductor Rafael Payare (33) married yesterday evening at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts in Katonah, (N.Y.) Another ceremony is planned next Sunday, August 24, in Venezuela at Ranchos de Chana on Isla de Margarita. According to a news published in the New York Times, both ceremonies incorporate Jewish elements.
Another British orchestra, Lancashire Sinfonietta, is facing an uncertain time following the announcement 80% cut to Arts funding by Lancashire County Council (LCC). Without deciding a final closure, the Orchestra’s Board decided to suspend its planned programme for the coming season 2013/14.
