After 39 seasons with free, fully staged performances in Central Park, New York Grand Opera canceled this year’s season due to the « increasing unpredictability of the weather ». On the company’s website, conductor Vincent La Selva writes: « As you may remember, we had to cancel a number of performances in recent summers due to heavy rainstorms. L’Opéra de Bruxelles ‘La Monnaie’ terminera la saison 2012/13, touchant à sa fin, avec une réduction supplémentaire de 1,1 millions d’Euros. Le budget prévu de 33 millions sera donc finalement de 31,9 millions. Le directeur de la ‘Monnaie’, Peter de Caluwé, a confié au journal autrichien ‘Kurier’ qu’il ne sait pas où se plaindre, car aucun politicien belge ne va jamais à l’opéra. Selon de Caluwé, le budget de la ‘Monnaie’ a été continuellement réduit de 2% par an depuis 2008.
