George E. Lewis

African-American conductor and composer George E. Lewis, 69, will lead the New York based International Contemporary Ensemble, the group has announced. Lewis, who is also teaching at Columbia University, will take the helm as artistic director later this month. He will replace Ross Karre, a percussionist who after five years as artistic director is stepping down to take a teaching position at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
