Following the resignation of General Manager Christiano Chiorat, conductor Fabio Luisi quits as Music Director of the Maggio Fiorentino: the announcement was made in a letter to the mayor Dario Nardella and to Cristiano Chiarot, then spread to employees. Luisi announces the decision « with a feeling of extreme discomfort and great sorrow » and speaks of « incomprehensible strategic choices of the last few days ». Clearly, the conductor points at the politicians who want to gain power in the management.

New York’s Lincoln Center has extended the contract of Music Director Louis Langrée through the summer of 2023. The 58-year-old French conductor has held the position since 2003. 25-year-old Venezuelan clarinettist Karen Palacios was arrested last June 1 by officials of the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence (DGCIM). She was a member of El Sistema and later of the National Philharmonic, but her contract was    cancelled because she signed in favour of the presidential referendum in 2017. Having been arrested, she is accused of inciting hatred and expressing a position against the government of Nicolas Maduro via social media.

Zu seinem 50. Geburtstag ist der deutsche Tenor Jonas Kaufmann am Freitagabend in der Bayerischen Staatsoper in München mit der Meistersinger-Medaille geehrt worden. Opernintendant Nikolaus Bachler überreichte die Porzellanplakette nach der Aufführung von Giuseppe Verdis Otello und erinnerte an Kaufmanns Beginn an dem Münchner Opernhaus vor zehn Jahren. « Du hast uns so viel geschenkt in den Jahren. Und das schönste ist: bei deiner unglaublichen Weltkarriere ist das immer deine Heimat geblieben », sagte Bachler.

French-Canadian bass Joseph Rouleau died on Friday in Montreal. He was 90 years old. Born in Matane, Québec, he studied privately with Édouard Woolley and Albert Cornellier in Montreal, and at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal with Martial Singher. He went to Milan, Italy, for complementary studies with Mario Basiola and Antonio Narducci. He sang small roles with the Opéra national du Québec, but his real debut was as Colline in La Bohème, in New Orleans Opera, in 1955. Read More →
