Austrian composer Ivan Eröd dies yesterday, aged 83. He was born in Budapest in 1936 and studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. He emigrated to Austria in 1956 and continued his studies at the Vienna Music Academy. From 1962–1968 he was solo répétiteur at the Wiener Staatsoper and the Wiener Festwochen. From 1967 to 1989 he taught music theory and composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Graz, and later taught at the Vienna Music Academy. His students included Rudolf Hinterdorfer, Georg Friedrich Haas, Michele Trenti and Gerhard Präsent. From 2004–2009 he was a teacher at Franz Liszt Academy of Music. Read More →

Aufgrund einer ärztlich empfohlenen Regenerierungspause wird Mariss Jansons seine geplanten Konzerte in den Monaten Juni, Juli und August nicht dirigieren, teilte der Bayerische Rundfunk mit. Davon betroffen sind auch solche mit dem Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, zwei Abonnementkonzerte in München sowie Tourneekonzerte in Ingolstadt, Riga, Redefin, London und Salzburg. Mit Daniel Harding, Susanna Mälkki und Yannick Nezet-Seguin konnte das Symphonieorchester des BR erstklassige Dirigenten als Einspringer gewinnen.

34 percussionists and 3 composers aged 19 to 32 from 13 countries have been selected from 135 candidates to participate at the 74th Geneva International Music Competition. The Boston Symphony Orchestra is unveiling a sculpture of its longtime music director today at the orchestra’s summer home at Tanglewood. Koussevitzky served as the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s music director from 1924 until 1949, the second-longest tenure in its history. Italian mezzosoprano Cecilia Bartoli has withdrawn from three performances of Handel’s Julius Caesar scheduled for October. The singer is shocked by the decision from the opera house’s board to not renew the contract of the current General Manager Alexander Pereira. She was supposed to produce a larger Handel project with Pereira and won’t do it without the Austrian manager.

Opus 3 Artists has announced that conductor Bramwell Tovey, 65, has been diagnosed with cancer. « His doctors expect him to make a complete recovery. At the advice of his medical team, Maestro Tovey has withdrawn from select appearances while undergoing treatment.
