Not officially confirmed news that the upcoming renovation of the Auditorium of Oviedo could lead to the complete closure of the building are worrying the concert organizers of the Spanish city. They believe their annual series could be heavily be affected. The building hosts some of the most important musical cycles of the city, including the season of the Symphony Orchestra of the Principality of Asturias. Possible alternatives in other spaces have not yet been presented.
Hungarian conductor Gabor Kali, 35, has won Hong Kong’s first International Conducting Competition. Kali scored the highest mark from an international jury headed by Yip Wing-sie, Music Director of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and Christoph Poppen, its principal guest conductor. The Israeli Lahav Shani, 29, has been named Music Director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and will succeed Zubin Mehta in 2020. Mehta became Music Director in 1977. Shani will also become the chief conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2018 (succeeding Yannick Nézet-Séguin) and recently became the principal guest conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. In 2013, he won first prize at the Gustav Mahler International Conducting Competition in Bamberg.
