The very first edition of Concours Fondation Polycarpe, a competition for opera conductors organized by the Royal Opera of Liège, Belgium, ended last weekend with no First Prize. Instead, two Second Prizes have been awarded (ex aequo) to Michele Spotti (* 1993, Italy) and Pierre Dumoussaud (*1990, France). Antoine Glatard (*1983, France) won Third Prize.

Italian basso buffo Enzo Dara died on Friday in Mantua. Born in 1938, Enzo Dara made his debut in 1960 as Colline in Puccini’s La Bohème. He quickly became famous for his buffo roles, Dulcamara (Donizetti’s Elixir of Love ), Mustafà and Bartolo (L’Italiana in Algeri and Il Barbiere di Siviglia e by Rossini), Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola and Don Pasquale in Don Pasquale. In 1971 he sung Don Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia, directed by Claudio Abbado.
