The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra will have its funding from the City Council cut by 25% from April 2017. In a press release the Orchestra says: « A cut of this scale equates to a reduction of £228,000 from the current year’s level. Coming on top of the £1.47 million real-terms public funding cuts which the orchestra has already absorbed since 2010, it means the CBSO’s public funding will drop below that currently received by any other regional symphony orchestra in the country, with its Birmingham City Council grant falling to levels last seen in the 1980s. » Read More →

The Montclair Orchestra has selected David Chan as its first Music Director, to lead the orchestra in its 2017-2018 inaugural season. The search process began in August, with nearly one hundred candidates from all across the globe applying to lead the development of the new ensemble. After Roger Kaiser, from Dallas, scattered the ashes of his deceased mentor over the orchestra pit at the Metropolitan Opera last weekend, provoking the cancellation of two performances, the man has now issued an apology letter addressed to Peter Gelb and the MET. British conductor Daniel Harding, 41, like Herbert von Karajan, is a fan of aviation. As France Musique revealed this week, that Harding got his pilot’s license two years ago and just passed the final exam for the ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot Licence).

A 34-year-old Danish conductor, Christian Kluxen, has been named as the Victoria Symphony’s new Music Director. After a multi-year search that reviewed hundreds of applicants and interviewed dozens of candidates, the West Canadian orchestra announced now the appointment starting from the 2017/18 season.
