Thomaskantor Georg Christoph Biller (59) will nach 22 Jahren an der Spitze des Leipziger Thomanerchors sein Amt aufgeben. Er aus gesundheitlichen Gründen hat bei der Stadt um Auflösung seines Vertrages zum Monatsende gebeten. Biller ist der 16. Thomaskantor nach Johann Sebastian Bach.
Nach einer per e-mail eingegangenen Bombedrohung wurde das Mariinsky-Theater in St. Petersburg von Spezialisten komplett durchsucht. Es wurde keine Bombe gefunden. Eine Evakuierung wurde nicht durchgeführt, aber die Bewegungsfreiheit im Theater war vorübergehend eingeschränkt. Die Abendvorstellungen konnten ungehindert stattfinden
Carlos Izcaray
The Alabama Symphony Orchestra, at home in Alabama’s biggest city, Birmingham, has appointed Carlos Izcaray (*1977 in Caracas) as its next music director. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra announced that their Trustee Bruce Clinton and his wife, Martha, along with members of The Clinton Family Fund, pledged $2 million to the CSO to endow the Principal Timpani position in the Orchestra. The position, held since 2013 by David Herbert, will be known as The Clinton Family Fund Principal Timpani Chair of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
372 applications have been treated by Luxembourg’s National Cultural Fund in 2014 (+50%). 252 projects have been subsidized (+ 34,38 %).However the total amount of the aids sunk by 22,14% to €509.856,09. Music took most of this sum: €158 901,00 (31,17 %)
The Green Bay Symphony Orchestra in Wisconsin is closing down at the end of this season. Founded in 1913 the orchestra has a small debt, but sinking revenues from ticket sales and from donations have brought the board to the decision to end activities. However, as the Journal Sentinel reports, musicians remain hopeful that they can drum up support to keep the symphony intact. Some of them are in talks to carry on under a partnership with the Madison-based Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. Green Bay, situated at Lake Michigan, some 200 kilometers North of Milwaukee, has 100.000 inhabitants.
Bayerns Ministerpräsident Seehofer hat sich beim Neujahrsgespräch im Münchner Presseclub für den geplanten Bau eines neuen Münchner Konzertsaals ausgeprochen. Sowohl die Münchner Philharmoniker als auch das Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks benötigten eine angemessene Spielstätte. Laut BR hat Seehofer gesagt: « Wir bauen den Konzertsaal, weil ich der festen Überzeugung bin, dass eine Welthauptstadt auch Weltkultur braucht. » Zuletzt hatte es Meinungen gegeben, keinen neuen Saal zu bauen, sondern die bestehenden Säle, Herkulessaal und Gasteig, zu renovieren.
Der Geiger, Musikpublizist und Pädagoge Oliver Wille, Gründer des Kuss-Quartetts, wird ab 2016 Intendant der Sommerlichen Musiktage Hitzacker. Er wird dort Nachfolger von Carolin Widmann. Die Sommerlichen Musiktage Hitzacker 2015 finden vom 25. Juli bis 2. August letztmalig unter deren künstlerischer Leitung statt.

Die Wiener Staatsoper meldet Erfolg bei ihrem seit Oktober 2013 laufenden Livestreaming-Programm. Dieses verzeichnete mit der Silvester-‘Fledermaus’ erstmals mehr als 1.000 User. Zusätzlich zu den rund 2000 Zuschauern im Saal bezahlten 1.163 Nutzer für den Livestream. Das bedeutet eine Erweiterung des Publikums von über 50%. http://www.staatsoperlive.com/de/
Philharmonie de Paris
A nice scandal: The architect who built the Philharmonie in Paris, Jean Nouvel, will not attend the official inauguration tonight. In an article published by Le Monde he says the event is premature since the building is still a major construction site. Only the main hall is finished and Jean Nouvel says it makes no sense to inaugurate the new building without the adjacent foyers and other places. Our colleagues from ResMusica have pointed out that the musicians of Orchestre de Paris went on the stage of the hall last Monday only, without having made any acoustical tests. One only can ask: Why all this haste?
