For the great and very British disguise Feast of his coronation on May 6 at Westminster Abbey Britain’s King Charles III selected a musical program, which will see “a range of musical styles and performers blend tradition, heritage and ceremony with new musical voices of today,” according to Buckingham Palace.
The program includes orchestral works, choral pieces and one organ commission. Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber will write the flagship anthem for this event. The other new works have been created by Sarah Class, Nigel Hess, Paul Mealor, Tarik O’Regan, Roxanna Panufnik, Shirley J. Thompson, Judith Weir, Roderick Williams, and Debbie Wiseman.
The ceremony will also include music by William Byrd, George Frideric Handel, Edward Elgar, Henry Walford Davies, William Walton, Hubert Parry and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
A gospel choir is also set to perform, in addition to the Choir of Westminster Abbey and the Choir of His Majesty’s Chapel Royal. Antonio Pappano will be the conductor of the Coronation Orchestra.
