The Czech Petr Popelka, 33, has been named Chief Conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra (Kringkastingsorkestret) from the 2020/21 season. He is the successor of Miguel Harth-Bedoya, who has been the orchestra’s Chief Conductor from 2013.
Popelka was born in 1986. He started piano lessons but ended up with double bass studies in Prague and Freiburg. Petr was awarded the Neeme Järvi Prize for the best young conductor by the Gstaad Menuhin Festival Academy in 2017. In this current season, he is Conductor Fellow of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra.
