The Montreal Chamber Orchestra has twittered an outcry to save the orchestra which is in a deep financial crisis that may threaten its future. Most of the orchestra’s funding comes from private donations. Just a few thousand dollars are from government grants and foundations. Domtar, a Montreal-based company, used to contribute nearly a quarter of the ensemble’s $400,000 annual budget. The company ended this support recently on very short notice. A subsequent Kickstarter campaign did not bring enough money, so that concerts have been cancelled and the rest of the season is in jeopardy.
