Polish composer Marcin Stanczyk (*1977) is this year’s winner of the prestigious Toru Takemitsu Composition Award in Japan. Ninety seven participants from 28 countries took part in the competition, which is named after the famous Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu who died in 1996.
Marian Stanczyk is a graduate of the Music Academy in Lódź. He also studied in Germany, Austria and Italy. He is a prizewinner of several international competitions and his works have been performed at major events, including the Warsaw Autumn, the Paris based IRCAM and the Gaudeamus Music Week in Amsterdam. The title of the winning composition is ‘SIGHS – hommage à Fryderyk Chopin’. It was performed by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Toshiyuki Kudo.
