Leonard Slatkin hat Rachmaninovs Zweite Symphonie zweimal aufgenommen, zum ersten Mal in St. Louis und danach in Detroit (Naxos). Die zweite Aufnahme ist besser geatmet, dramatischer auch, aber klanglich nicht so gut wie die erste, die vom legendären Elite Recordings-Team Marc Aubort und Joanna Nickrenz für Vox gemacht wurde und durch eine wunderbar ausgeglichene Balance und reiche Orchestertexturen auffällt. Dass die Aufnahme fast 45 Jahre alt ist, würde man nicht sagen, so gut klingt sie in diesem, neuen 192 kHz / 24 bit-Remastering.
Slatkin dirigiert mit jugendlichem Elan, der Klang des Orchesters ist schlank und farbig, auch wenn der Dirigent, wie schon gesagt, die Musik nicht so überlegen atmen lässt wie in der späteren Detroiter Aufnahme, die bei allen Qualitäten des Saint Louis Symphony auch das bessere Orchester hat.
Dennoch kann man nicht abstreiten, dass Slatkin schon 1979 ein gutes Gespür für russische symphonische Musik hatte.
Leonard Slatkin recorded Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony twice, first in St. Louis and then in Detroit (Naxos). The second recording is better breathed, more dramatic too, but the recorded sound is not as good as in the first, done for Vox by the legendary Elite Recordings team of Marc Aubort and Joanna Nickrenz. It is wonderfully balanced and surprises with especially rich orchestral textures. You wouldn’t say the recording is nearly 45 years old, so good does it sound in this, new 192 kHz / 24 bit remastering.
Slatkin conducts with youthful verve, and the orchestra’s sound is lean and colorful, even if, as noted, the conductor doesn’t let the music breathe as well as in the later Detroit recording, which, for all the Saint Louis Symphony’s qualities, also has the better orchestra.
Still, one cannot deny that Slatkin had a good feel for Russian symphonic music as early as 1979.
