Die amerikanische Komponistin Florence Price (1887-1953) schrieb eine Musik, die mit afroamerikanischen Idiomen durchsetzt ist und wegen ihrer originellen und reizvollen Melodik gefällt.
Die Symphonie Nr. 3 wurde im Jahre 1940 in Detroit uraufgeführt. Es gibt darin dunklere und irgendwie rebellisch klingende Passagen, ein liebenswert lyrisches und warmherziges Andante, einen tänzerischen dritten Satz, der wie in all ihren Symphonien mit Juba überschrieben ist, und ein schwungvolles Finale.
Die sehr attraktive Mississippi River Suite folgt dem Lauf des Flusses und beschreibt Land und Leute drum herum. Ethiopia’s Shadow in America hat folgende Sätze: Introduction and Allegretto: The Arrival of the Negro in America when first brought here as a slave – Andante: His Resignation and Faith – Allegro: His Adaptation, a fusion of his native and acquired impulses. Es ist ein dramatisch-emotionales Stück, das wie alle anderen auf dieser CD von John Jeter und dem ORF-Orchester in exzellenten Interpretationen vorlegt wird.
