Coinciding with his return to the podium of the Chicago Symphony after nearly two years of absence due to the pandemic, Italian conductor Riccardo Muti, 80, has had his position as the ensemble’s Music Director extended for another year, until mid-2023. An extension of his contract for two years, through 2022, was already announced at the beginning of 2018.
Muti is Music Director in Chicago since 2010, when he took over from Daniel Barenboim and after four years in which the orchestra had no chief conductor.
