British cellist Rohan de Saram has died on September 29 at the age of 85. He was born in Sheffield to Sri Lankan parents in 1939. A pupil of Gaspar Cassadó, in 1955 he was the first winner of the Guilhermina Suggia Prize and five years later he made his Carnegie Hall debut under the baton of Dmitri Mitropoulos. In 1979 he joined the Arditti Quartet, becoming one of the leading specialists in the contemporary cello repertoire. He remained with the Arditti Quartet until 2005 and then continued his activity as a soloist and chamber musician.
