The Serge Rachmaninoff Conservatory in Paris is likely to disappear. According to French media reports, the municipality of Paris has decided to sell the 600 square meter mansion that houses it, at 26 Avenue de New York in the sixteenth arrondissement of Paris. On three floors, there is a concert hall, a canteen and classrooms.
The Serge Rachmaninov Conservatory was founded in 1923. It was created by former professors of the Imperial Conservatories of Russia, who had immigrated to Paris following the 1917 Revolution. Among the first teachers were Feodor Chaliapin, Nicholas Tcherepnin, Nikolai Medtner, Serge Lifar and many more. The building was bought in 1987 by the city at the initiative of Jacques Chirac, Mayor of Paris, which shows that Chirac had a different understanding of culture than the bicycle aficionado Hidalgo.
The conservatory’s management plans to launch a supporting committee.
