The Cambridge University has announced the premiere of an excerpt from the Italian opera by Franz Liszt found ten years ago by David Trippett in an archive in Weimar, Germany. The libretto is based on Lord Byron’s tragedy Sardanapalus.
Trippett, Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Music at the University of Cambridge, is said to have spent the last two years working critically on the manuscript, in order to allow a performance. A ten-minute preview will be performed for the first time in public by Armenian soprano and rising talent Anush Hovhannisyan as part of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World contest in June. Trippett believes that the music is breath-taking.
A critical edition of the music for act 1 is to be published by Editio Musica Budapest in 2018.
