Despite a strong support from its patrons and 30.00 signatures in a petition, Sinfonietta Lausanne has suffered a funding cut of CHF 150.000 by the Lausanne City Council. In a budget of CHF 450.000, the loss of 150.000 Francs is dramatic for this orchestra with some 80 musicians, especially since a second cut of a supplementary 100.000 Francs is foreseen for the next year. The orchestra management is maintaining pressure on the politicians to ensure that this will not happen.
Sinfonietta is considered as a platform for the professional careers of many young classical musicians. The politicians have combined their funding cut with the recommendation that Sinfonietta should undergo a fundamental reform and work closely together with the local Music High School. The management fears that due to the decrease of public funding the orchestra may not be able to survive.
