The death of Spanish conductor Jesus Lopez Cobos has been announced today. López Cobos (78) died last night due to cancer-related problems he had been struggling with for some time and which had forced him to cancel several concerts.
Born in 1940, he first studied Philosophy, then decided to devote his life to conducting. He studied with Hans Swarowsky, Franco Ferrara and Peter Maag. He was Generalmusikdirektor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin between 1981 and 1990, Music Director of the National Orchestra of Spain between 1984 and 1988 and of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra between 1990 and 2000.
From 2003 until 2010 he was Musical Director of the Teatro Real de Madrid.
