Spanish opera singer Teresa Berganza, mezzo-soprano, died today in San Lorenzo del Escorial at the age of 89. Berganza made her debut at 22 in Aix-en-Provence as Dorabella in Mozart’s opera « Cosi fan tutte. » This laid the foundation for a stage career that lasted more than three decades. Berganza sang at all the great opera houses, Madrid’s Teatro Real, La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera, London’s Covent Garden and the New York Met. She was also recognized as a song performer. She ended her career in 2008 and then devoted herself to teaching.
