Spanish singer Monserrat Caballe died at the age of 85 at the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona in the early hours of Saturday. She had been hospitalized on September 24. In 2012, the opera diva suffered a stroke in Russia.
Caballé’s career spanned 50 years. The singer was born in Barcelona, and at the age of nine was accepted at the city’s Conservatori Liceu. She graduated in 1953, and went to Italy, where she sang some minor roles. Her international breakthrough came in 1965 in Lucrezia Borgia at New York’s Carnegie Hall. She went on to perform at the major opera houses all over the world, singing a wide variety of roles.
