Dieses Album mit zeitgenössischer Musik beginnt mit der dreiteiligen Suite aus Thomas Adès’ Kammeroper Powder Her Face. Thema der Oper ist die Dirty Duchess, Margaret Campbell, Herzogin von Argyll, deren sexuelle Ausschweifungen 1963 während ihres Scheidungsverfahrens für Skandale und Klatsch in Großbritannien sorgten. Die kleine Suite enthält brillante und funkelnde Musik.
In Stargazer von Jonathan Dove, im Untertitel « eine Oper für Posaune und Orchester », beschreibt der Komponist einen Posaunisten mit einem Teleskop, der den Nachthimmel absucht. Das Orchester soll die Konstellationen darstellen, die er beobachtet, und er selber reagiert auf das, was er sieht, die Sterne, die arktischen Winde und die Milchstraße. Gleichzeitig ist das Stück eine Fantasie über die Melodie Twinkle, twinkle, little star.
Das alles ist klangreich, meistens laut und rhythmisch. Dem Solisten Peter Moore bietet das Stück Gelegenheit, mit seiner Posaune zu glänzen.
Danach kommt Eurydice, eine Suite von Matthew Aucoin aus seiner gleichnamigen Oper aus dem Jahre 2020. Auch das ist eine spektakuläre Musik mit viel brodelnder Unterweltstimmung, die in dem kurzen Stück Heath eine Fortsetzung findet.
Das Album endet mit Nico Muhlys Liar – einer Suite aus seiner Oper Marnie. nach dem gleichnamigen Film von Alfred Hitchcock aus dem Jahr 1964 Die Suite schwankt zwischen dunklen, turbulenten und sanfteren Passagen. Das BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra brilliert unter der Leitung des Spezialisten für zeitgenössische Musik, Timothy Redmond.
This album of contemporary music opens with the three-part suite from Thomas Adès’ chamber opera Powder Her Face. The subject of the opera is the Dirty Duchess, Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll, whose sexual excesses caused scandal and gossip in Britain during her divorce proceedings in 1963. The small suite contains brilliant and sparkling music.
In Stargazer by Jonathan Dove, subtitled « an opera for trombone and orchestra, » the composer describes a trombonist searching the night sky with a telescope. The orchestra is to represent the constellations he observes, and he himself reacts to what he sees, the stars, the Arctic winds and the Milky Way. At the same time, the piece is a fantasy on the melody Twinkle, twinkle, little star.
It is all rich in sound, mostly loud and rhythmic. The piece gives soloist Peter Moore a chance to shine on his trombone.
This is followed by Eurydice, a suite by Matthew Aucoin from his 2020 opera of the same name. This is also spectacular music with a lot of seething underworld atmosphere, which is continued in the short piece Heath.
The album closes with Nico Muhly’s Liar, a suite from his opera Marnie, based on Alfred Hitchcock’s 1964 film of the same name. The suite oscillates between dark, turbulent passages and softer ones.
The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra shines under the baton of contemporary music specialist Timothy Redmond.
