Wie eine Wundertüte öffnete ich diese SACD mit Werken des 81-jährigen uruguayischen Dirigenten und Komponisten José Serebrier und ließ mich überraschen.Die Symphonic BACH Variations für Klavier und Orchester sind ein hoch dramatisches, streckenweise martialisch-perkussives Werk, das mit seinen Dies Irae-Anklängen eher düstere Stimmungen wiedergibt. Alexandre Kantorow ist der brillante Solist in diesem fulminanten Stück.

Laments and Hallelujahs wendet sich vom dunklen Beginn über einen Mittelteil mit Melancholie und immer wieder gebremstem Aufschwung zum ‘Sonnenaufgang’ mit entsprechend viel hoffnungsvoller und hymnischer Musik. Auch das ist ein spektakuläres Stück und typisch für Serebriers opulent-symphonischen Stil. Ganz zum Schluss bekommt auch noch ein Chor die Gelegenheit, ein paar (für den Produzenten teure) Noten zu singen. Serebrier hat, wie schon in den BACH-Variationen, alles aufgeboten, was das wuchtige Orchester hergibt: Streicher, großes Schlagwerk und so ziemlich alle verfügbaren Blasinstrumente. Da wäre Berlioz neidisch geworden.

Als 2010 die Bezaly-SACD mit Konzerten von Serebrier, Izarra, Vine und Ginastera veröffentlicht wurde, schrieb ich: « Auch wenn die Platte nach einem Werk von Carl Vine benannt ist, muss man wohl das Flötenkonzert des Dirigenten und Komponisten José Serebrier als das attraktivste Werk dieser CD ansehen. Er widmete es Sharon Bezaly in 2008. Es ist eine brillante Komposition, die von der Solistin eine enorme Virtuosität verlangt, was der Bezaly natürlich keine Schwierigkeiten macht. Doch es gibt auch sensuelle Passagen und im vierten Satz ein berührendes Solo für Cello. Ein tolles Stück! » Dem ist heute nichts hinzuzufügen.

Es folgen drei sehr anspruchsvolle Stücke im Tango-Modus, die für den Komponisten eine Hommage an seine Heimat Uruguay darstellen.

Ein lyrisch-sentimentales Adagio und eine Bearbeitung von Tchaikovskys Romanze ‘Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt’ beendet das ansonsten so dramatisch-aufgewühlte Programm reflektiv und ruhig.

Hochkarätige Interpretationen unter der Leitung des Komponisten und exzellente Tonaufnahmen machen aus dieser Produktion eine SACD, die für jeden attraktiv ist, der spektakuläre, rhythmisch-dramatische Symphonik mag.

I opened this SACD with works by the 81-year-old Uruguayan conductor and composer José Serebrier like a grab bag and let myself be surprised.
The Symphonic BACH Variations for piano and orchestra are a highly dramatic, at times martial and percussive work. With its Dies Irae echoes it has a rather gloomy mood. Alexandre Kantorov is the brilliant soloist in this brilliant piece.
Laments and Hallelujahs turns from a dark beginning over a melancholic middle section and a repeatedly slowed upswing to a hopeful and hymnal music. This again is a spectacular piece and typical of Serebrier’s opulent symphonic style. At the very end, a choir gets the opportunity to sing a few notes which turn out to be quite expensive for the producer. As in the BACH Variations, the composition has everything the massive orchestra can offer: Large strings sections, various percussion instruments and pretty much every available wind instrument. Berlioz would have become jealous.
When the Bezaly SACD with concertos by Serebrier, Izarra, Vine and Ginastera was released in 2010, I wrote: « Even though the record is named after a work by Carl Vine, the flute concerto by the conductor and composer José Serebrier must be considered the most attractive work on this CD. He dedicated it to Sharon Bezaly in 2008, and it is a brilliant composition that demands enormous virtuosity from the soloist, which of course Bezaly does not have any difficulties with. But there are also sensual passages and in the fourth movement a touching solo for cello. A great piece! » There’s nothing to add to that today.
Three very demanding pieces in tango mode follow, which for the composer are a homage to his native Uruguay. A lyrical-sentimental Adagio and an arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s romance ‘Only those who know longing’ ends the otherwise so dramatically turbulent programme in a reflective and calm mood.
Top-class interpretations under the composer’s direction and excellent sound recordings make this production an SACD that is attractive to anyone who likes spectacular, rhythmic-dramatic symphonic music.
