Eine große Enttäuschung und deshalb eigentlich überflüssig ist diese Neuaufnahme von Johann Sebastian Bachs Johannespassion. Das ist erstaunlich, denn das Concerto Copenhagen und Lars Ulrik Mortensen sind generell für erstklassige Interpretationen bekannt.
Bachs Passion wird hier auf ein Minimum reduziert, sowohl beim Instrumentarium, beim Chor als leider auch im Ausdruck. Bachs Musik kommt sehr spröde und asketisch daher, kein Moment, wo sich das Genie voll entfalten kann. Ich habe derart minimalistische Aufführungen schon öfters live gehört, z.B. mit Eric Ericson und seinem Ensemble; allerdings waren sie trotz minimaler Besetzung immer sehr musikalisch und ausdrucksvoll. Das ist hier nicht der Fall, zumal auch die als Solisten fungierenden Chorsänger nicht optimal sind.
A great disappointment and therefore actually superfluous is this new recording of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. John Passion. This is astonishing, because Concerto Copenhagen and Lars Ulrik Mortensen are generally known for first-class interpretations.
Bach’s Passion is reduced to a minimum here, both in instrumentation, chorus and, unfortunately, expression. Bach’s music comes across as very brittle and ascetic, not a moment where the genius can fully unfold. I have heard such minimalist performances before, for example with Eric Ericson and his ensemble; however, despite minimal instrumentation, they were always very musical and expressive. That is not the case here, especially since the choristers acting as soloists are not optimal either.
