Der Anblick von Antoni Gaudís Sagrada Familia in Barcelona lässt nicht gleichgültig. Mächtigen Eindruck hat das imposante Bauwerk auch auf den britischen Komponisten Richard Blackford gemacht, der 2022 eine klanggewaltige Symphonie schrieb, die auf drei Säulen steht: die Geburt, die Passion und das Gloria. Gleich zu Beginn postieren uns David Hill und das BBC National Orchestra of Wales mit majestätischem Klang und starker innerer Ausstrahlung vor dieses gewaltige Architekturmonument. Es ist feierlicher, jubilierender, in Stein gemeißelter Klang, der im zweiten Satz in ein berührendes Lamento des Cellos übergeht. Dieser Trauergesang kontrastiert wunderbar mit Schärfen im Orchesterpart, die uns die innere Unruhe, die Angst, den Schmerz ins Bewusstsein rufen. Die Symphonie gipfelt in einem klangfarbigen Gloria, ein inspirierender Orchestersatz des gregorianischen Chorals, der zielsicher nach oben strebt, in die thronenden Türme der Sagrada Familia und weit darüber hinaus.
Kurz nach dieser Symphonie fand im März 2022 in London die Uraufführung der Kantate Babel statt, ein Auftragswerk des Camden Choir.
Auch hier setzt Richard Blackford auf eine starke musikalische Bildersprache, die eben Gottes Zorn, die große Flut und das Sprachenwirrwarr in Babel nachzeichnet – bis Gott seinen Frieden mit der Menschheit macht.
Auch dieses Werk erleben wir in einer vitalen, energischen und dynamischen Interpretation mit einem Schlusshymnus, der der englischen Chortradition alle Ehre macht.
The sight of Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia in Barcelona leaves no one indifferent. The imposing building also made a strong impression on British composer Richard Blackford, who in 2022 wrote a powerful symphony based on three pillars: the Nativity, the Passion and the Gloria. Right from the start, David Hill and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales place us in front of this mighty architectural monument with a majestic sound and a strong inner radiance. It is a solemn, jubilant sound, carved in stone, which in the second movement merges into a touching cello lament. This song of mourning contrasts beautifully with the sharpness of the orchestral writing, which makes us aware of inner turmoil, fear and pain. The symphony culminates in a colorful Gloria, an inspiring orchestral setting of Gregorian chant that soars unerringly upward to the enthroned spires of the Sagrada Familia and far beyond.
Shortly after this symphony, the world premiere of the cantata Babel, a work commissioned by the Camden Choir, took place in London in March 2022.
Here, too, Richard Blackford uses powerful musical imagery to describe God’s wrath, the great flood, and the confusion of languages at Babel – until God makes peace with humanity.
We also experience this work in a vital, energetic and dynamic interpretation, with a final hymn that does credit to the English choral tradition.
