Der Schweizer Komponist Benno Amman (1904-1986) hat seine Missa Defensor Pacis 1946 für die Heiligsprechung von Nikolaus von Flüe, dem Schutzpatron der Schweiz, im Petersdom in Rom komponiert. Er schrieb es für einen 6- bis 12-stimmigen a-capella-Chor unter Verwendung eines Cantus firmus, freilich mit Harmonien, die dem 20. Jahrhundert zuzurechnen sind. Er verbindet so auf sehr interessante Art Vergangenheit und Moderne.

Nach der Uraufführung im Jahre 1947 hat Amman die Messe überarbeitet, und diese Aufnahme benutzt diese 1954 publizierte revidierte Fassung, deren strenge Schönheit in dieser Einspielung voll zum Ausdruck kommt. Es ist eine echte Kammermesse, ohne besondere Effekte

Die Basler Madrigalisten sind ein erstklassiges und ausgewogenes a-capella-Ensemble. Das gesangliche Resultat ist vortrefflich, die Intonation immer lupenrein, die Artikulation exzellent. Die verschiedenen Stimmtypen passen gut zusammen und sind in ihrer Farbgebung genau aufeinander abgestimmt, so dass die Polyphonie der Musik bestens zur Geltung kommt.

Raphael Immoos dirigiert beeindruckend stilvoll und mit großer innerer Ruhe, ohne dass darunter die Intensität des Gesangs leiden würde. Dementsprechend strahlt die Musik über weite Strecken eine tiefe Gelassenheit aus und garantiert durch ihre Struktur und Schönheit eine Art von zerebraler Reinigung.

The Swiss composer Benno Amman (1904-1986) composed his Missa Defensor Pacis in 1946 for the canonization of Nicholas of Flüe, the patron saint of Switzerland, in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. He wrote it for a 6- to 12-part a cappella choir using a cantus firmus, admittedly with harmonies that belong to the 20th century. Thus, it combines the past and the modern in a very interesting way. After the premiere in 1947, Amman revised the Mass, and this recording uses that revised version from 1954, whose austere beauty is fully expressed in this recording. It is a true chamber mass, with no special effects.
The Basel Madrigalists are a first-rate and well-balanced a cappella ensemble. The vocal results are excellent, the intonation always flawless, the articulation excellent. The different types of voices fit well together and are precisely matched in their coloration, so that the polyphony of the music is shown to its best advantage.
Raphael Immoos’s conducting is tasteful and has a great inner calm, yet not at the expense of the music’s intensity. Accordingly, the music mostly radiates a deep serenity and through its structure and beauty it guarantees kind of a cerebral cleansing.
